159 Appendix B Abridged, Amended Version of the AAP Blueprint for Children PPediatrics rior to the 2016 US presidential election, the American Academy of (AAP) published Blueprint for Children: How the Next President Can Build a Foundation for a Healthy Future. In this document, the AAP out- lined general goals and specific policy recommendations for healthy children, secure families, and strong communities. The AAP argued that these goals and recommendations are necessary for the United States to remain a leading nation. Many of these goals and recommendations are included, often word for word, in the following abridged and amended version. But here, the focus is on building healthy, resilient children through strong families and commu- nities that care, and so we have expanded on some of the recommendations in the Blueprint for Children. These policy recommendations are grounded in the developmental science discussed throughout this book. By thinking developmentally, applying a public health approach, and nurturing wellness in childhood, we are promoting lifelong health. Building Healthy, Resilient Children Goals 1. All children have their essential needs (ie, physiologic, safety, connec- tion, and self-esteem) met. 2. All children, regardless of their immigration status, are covered by affordable health care coverage that is comprehensive and includes pediatric-specific and 2-generational benefits. 3. All children receive primary care in a medical home that is family centered. 4. All children have access to needed subspecialty pediatric care and men- tal health services. 13-appendix-B-9781610021524.indd 159 4/12/18 11:01 AM
